Expanding the Roster of Male Voice Actors in Gaming

While watching the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I couldn't help but notice a very familiar voice emanating from Indy's mouth – Troy Baker. However, this time around, he was doing an uncanny Harrison Ford impression. He replied, "No idea, but statistically speaking, I'm guessing Troy Baker."

It's remarkable how ubiquitous Troy Baker's voice has become in the video game industry. A quick glance at his filmography on Wikipedia reveals that he's been featured in at least one video game every year since 2004, with some years boasting over 25 credits. Although his frenetic pace of work has somewhat slowed as his career has taken off, he still seems to be everywhere. I'll be honest – when I heard his voice as Indy, I sighed.

This isn't a commentary on Baker's skill or lack thereof. Undoubtedly, he's a talented professional who dedicates himself to his craft. He has delivered some truly iconic performances over the years, especially the standout role of Joel in The Last of Us. However, I'm weary of consistently seeing the same trio of actors cast in major budget, triple-A games. Despite my appreciation for their work, there exist other actors beyond the likes of Nolan North, Yuri Lowenthal, and Troy Baker. In fact, there are many of them! What troubles me is that, when it comes to big console exclusives, seeing these three names in the cast no longer surprises or excites us.

It's not just a matter of growing tired of hearing the same voices repeatedly; it's a matter of a virtual monopoly. I can't help but reflect on SAG-AFTRA's recent deal, allowing union voice actors to create and license digital replicas of their voices. The concern is that prominent actors opting to license their voices might sideline aspiring actors trying to break into the industry. With everyone already hiring Troy Baker and company, the prospect of an AI replicating Baker's performance at a lower cost might dissuade studios from hiring lesser-known actors who, despite lacking name recognition, might bring unique qualities to their roles.

Whether or not Baker chooses to explore this avenue is beside the point. You could substitute his name with any other well-known voice actor, and the issue remains. It's akin to having the same cast in every blockbuster movie, perpetually. Imagine if Brad Pitt starred in every Oppenheimer film instead of Cillian Murphy. Are these three individuals truly the best choice for every role? Shouldn't audiences be treated to casts selected more for their suitability rather than their name brand? There's no 'next Troy Baker.' There's just Troy Baker, seemingly forever.

Troy Baker once quipped at The Game Awards that those aspiring to act in video games need only do two things: buy a decent microphone and wait for him and Nolan North to pass away. Unlike his other, less humorous jests, this one rings true and continues to do so. It's becoming increasingly difficult for anyone to enter and thrive in an industry that consistently prioritizes the same set of actors, especially with the advent of generative AI technology. Give me Noshir Dalal, at the very least. Anyone else.
