AMD's Bold Move: Price Cut on RX 7900 XT to Counter Nvidia's RTX 4070 Super

AMD's Bold Move Price Cut on RX 7900 XT to Counter Nvidia's RTX 4070 Super

Today marks a significant day for Nvidia as the highly anticipated RTX 4070 Super hits the shelves. However, AMD isn't one to sit idly by. In a strategic move, AMD has responded to Nvidia's big release with a substantial price cut on its RX 7900 XT, one of the top graphics cards in this generation. Is it a mere coincidence, or a calculated response to pre-empt Nvidia's next move with the rumored RTX 4070 Ti Super?

The RX 7900 XT, once priced at a hefty $900, now proudly displays a reduced official price tag of $750, with some models even available for as low as $710. Initially overshadowed by its sibling, the RX 7900 XTX, which offered superior performance for just $100 more, the RX 7900 XT struggled to gain popularity. Its price swiftly dropped to $800 and below at select retailers.

Adding a twist to the narrative is the introduction of DLSS 3 and ray tracing into the equation. While running Cyberpunk 2077 at ultra settings, 4K resolution, with ray tracing enabled and DLSS 3 toggled on, the RX 7900 XT yielded 18 frames per second (fps), compared to the impressive 77.5 fps produced by Nvidia's DLSS 3-powered hardware. This, however, underscores the prowess of Nvidia's DLSS 3 rather than critiquing the RX 7900 XT itself.

The looming question is how AMD's move will fare when the RTX 4070 Ti Super lands on the market with its expected $800 price tag. Anticipated to perform on par with the non-Super RTX 4080, it poses a potential threat to the RX 7900 XT. At $800, the RX 7900 XT finds itself in a precarious market position – not quite affordable enough to be a steal and not potent enough to be a must-have.

Nevertheless, for those unswayed by the allure of DLSS 3, the current discounts on the RX 7900 XT present an appealing option. With savings ranging from $50 to $100 compared to the forthcoming RTX 4070 Ti Super, it's a tempting proposition. However, it's worth noting that according to TweakTown, AMD's price cut may be a seasonal promotion, prompting potential buyers to act swiftly before the winds of change sweep in.

In a market where graphics card dynamics are ever-shifting, AMD's bold move sets the stage for an intriguing showdown with Nvidia's latest offerings.
